Integrating Life Sciences

Given this course focuses on weather elements and how they govern ecosystems, I incorporated more life science examples into my lectures. I was able to make connections between meteorological concepts to ecology, microbiology, agricultural sciences, and medical sciences, which was requested by students who took the class the previous year. I also designed the biometeorology lecture series to expand on how weather impacts life.

In the lecture about atmospheric moisture, I gave examples of how relative humidity is relevant to biology and biological studies.

I talked about the effect of low vs. high humidity to plants.

In this slide, I covered how high relative humidity is required for bacteria to multiply to a large enough population to invade plants.

I was able to incorporate my research experiences into lectures. I am currently studying the white mold pathogen, Sclerotinia sclerotiorum. Below is an example of the white mold disease cycle and how it follows the aerobiology process model.

I shared a story of how hail falling in July damaged research plots while I was an undergraduate research intern at Cornell AgriTech in Geneva, NY.
